Alchemy

Alchemy is a process that enables players to get various ingredients from all sorts of activities. Farming, killing mobs, harvesting flowers and much more. You can view the resources you've gained understanding of in [/dex] under the AlchDex section.

To start with alchemy, it's important to understand the basic steps. A large majority of this process will involve fermenting and distilling with ingredients you've discovered.

Basic steps to alchemy

  1. Collect ingredients from various activities.
  2. Ferment the ingredients using a heated cauldron.
  3. Distill the ferment when necessary
  4. Age the brew to create a drinkable or even better quality potion

Crafting Stations

Heated Cauldron

  • Place cauldron over Fire/Lava/Magma/other heat source
  • Fill with water & right click it with the ingredients
  • Wait for it to brew (use clock to check!)
  • Right click with glass bottles to fill with brew

Brewing Stand (Distiller)

  • Ferment goes in bottle section
  • Glowstone Dust goes into ingredient section (not consumed!)

Big Barrels (Aging)

  • Multiblock Structure, ages ferment into a drinkable potion
  • Requires sign that says "Barrel"
  • Can be made with different wood types (must be all the same wood)

Mortar & Pestle (Crushing)

  • Crush alchemy flowers to use for brewing recipes
  • Can also be used to turn custom flowers into dyes
  • You can find alchemy flowers in [/rtp] resource world

Combining the outputs of these crafting stations will allow you to create the various potion effects!

Recipes

In order to create a potion, you need to follow a set of steps, i.e. the amount of ingredients, which ingredients, how long to age etc. You can find lost recipes from:

  • Structure loot in resource world
  • Message in a Bottle (fishing loot!)
  • Witches (as a rare drop)
  • Suspicious Blocks

Once you have a recipe, right click it to add it to your [/dex]. You can view it, again in your [/dex] and you'll be able to make it using the crafting stations above!

Fermenting

The fermenting process is very simple. You take a heated cauldron (any cauldron filled with water above a heat source) and right click it with the proper ingredients. You then wait as long as you need to (TIP: You can right click the cauldron with a clock to see how long it's been!) and right click the cauldron with a bottle. You will get a bottle of ferment you will then either distill or age depending on the recipe.

Distilling

Distilling is a process where you filter out some unwanted materials. If your recipe calls for it, all you need is a brewing stand & glowstone dust. Put your brew & glowstone dust in the GUI as seen in the image to the right. The recipe may call for it to be distilled multiple times.

Once you've finished distilling, it's on to the final process aging! Note that some recipes may not require distilling or it may be finished after distilling.

Aging

Before you can start aging, you first need a barrel to age in! There are two different types of barrels, both require you to build a multi-block structure. The large barrel is 3 blocks wide & 4 blocks tall made out of stairs & planks (see image) and can hold up to 3 row of potions to age. The small barrel is 2 blocks wide and tall made entirely out of stairs (see image again). In order to turn these structures into barrels, you need to place a sign that says Barrel on it. Once you make it a barrel, you can remove the sign and as long as you don't break any of the structure's blocks, the barrel will still work!

Breaking the barrel's blocks does not let you know the structure is broken!

Barrels can be made out of any wood type, so long as it's the same type of wood through-out. For example in the images they're made of oak. I can't mix it with spruce, but I can change all the blocks into spruce versions. This will be important as some recipes require a specific type of wood for aging.

Once you finish aging a potion, you'll be ready to drink it! There are all sorts of potions to find, some of them can only be strictly found due to certain methods (i.e. you won't be able to find the same recipe you got from a message in a bottle in a sunken shop).

Tips & Tricks

  • Breaking barrel sign will not break the barrel structure (breaking the actual barrel blocks will!)
  • Recipes don't necessarily have multiple sources. If you find a recipe from a message in a bottle, then it may not come from other sources such as witches.
